Contrast is the most remarkable characteristic of this brief three-movement work for trumpet and piano, insofar as it occurs on a number of levels, such as in registration, tempo and muting, as well as in alternations between striking dance rhythms and free passages in a recitative style.
The principal melody, designed to highlight the traditionally epic and martial qualities of the trumpet, is repeated cyclically throughout the three movements; however, with a slight change in character with each new presentation. After its initial appearance in the first movement, the theme acquires a mysterious and obscure semblance in the second. In the third movement it resumes its heroic sound and finally appears in the manner of a coda, but in a lively and festive character.
