Solo for unaccompanied flute.
Grade 6. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
Composed in 1988, this work signaled a new approach to composition constructed around the elements of song or lyrical gesture. Based on three intervals, seconds, augmented fourths and sevenths, del Mónaco also plays with the flute’s timbric possibilities. At the same time, however, “Chants” is a deeply personal work, having been inspired by the death of a close friend of the composer. Writing not long after del Mónaco‘s own death in 2015, Venezuelan flutist María Fernanda Castillo considers that in “Chants,” del Mónaco “musically communicated all of the pain, frustration and rage” that he felt at that time.
Dedicated to Venezuelan flutist Luis Julio Toro, the work was premiered by Toro at the Humboldt Cultural Association in Caracas in 1988. Five years later, Toro recorded the work on a compact disk entitled, “Vientos alisios.”
