Solo for alto saxophone with piano accompaniment.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: five minutes.
Set consists of a piano score and one part.
For as long as can be remembered, Latin American women have been observed working long hours grinding food, especially corn, in a kind of mortar (“pilón” in Spanish) made out of hollowed out tree trunk. To help pass the time, they will oftentimes sing while working.
Inspired in these work songs, in “Canto de Pilón” the composer uses short series of quarter notes in representation of the long wooden pestle as it strikes the bottom of the mortar. At the same time the spirit of the songs themselves can be heard in the short melodic/rhythmic cells in the saxophone.
Although its harmonic language is based on a free atonality, the composer’s main focus in this work is on timbre and texture. And more specifically, in how Pérez Valero is finding new ways to interpret folk music within a contemporary aesthetic.
