Solo for clarinet with piano accompaniment.
Grade 2-3. Approx. duration: five and a half minutes.
Set consists of a score and one part.
The Piaroa, also known by other names such as De’arua (masters of the forest) and Wothuha (knowledgeable people), are an indigenous people that live near the Orinoco River in Venezuela. They are strongly egalitarian and supportive of individual autonomy. Though largely peaceful, they have been known to have entered into violent conflict with neighboring tribes.
The composition, “Canto Piaroa,” is inspired in the traditional music of this people. At the same time, the work reveals a ternary form (AAB) with some elements of polytonality. Although the melody in the clarinet is original and not based on any particular Piaroa melody, Pérez Valero does make use, however, of the minor thirds and perfect fourths that are characteristic of Piaroa music.
