Solo for unaccompanied tuba.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: five and a half minutes.
Set consists of one performance part.
The Black Cat was composed between 2009 and 2010. With its large leaps, sudden dynamic changes and contemporary techniques, such as flutter-tonguing, multiphonics, slap-tongue and variations in vibrato, the work requires a virtuosic interpretation. Although it does not follow an established structural format, the work can be roughly divided into three sections: the beginning and end of the piece are very traditional in nature, while the central section is largely contemporary and uses many static sonorities.
Reviewed in the ITEA Journal (Vol. 44 No. 4), Brian Gallion says that “this looks to be a work that would be great fun to perform and hear--especially if you‘re a fan of Mr. Poe.”
Nelson Corchado, tuba.
