Henri Brod
Henri Brod (1799-1839) was a French oboist, wind instrument maker, teacher and composer. He was a student of Gustave Vogt at the Paris Conservatoire and won the premier prix in 1818. Although Brod was appointed second oboist in the Opéra orchestra he occasionally substituted for Vogt during the elder oboist’s absences. Oboists today still use many of Brod’s inventions, such as his cane shaper and gouging machine. Brod is also recognized for having straightened the English horn, which up until that time had been a curved instrument. Among his works are an oboe method and solo works for oboe as well as an opera and three virtuosic wind quintets, which are considered by many to be brilliant.
