In 2014 a series of protests, political demonstrations and civil insurrection began in Venezuela due to that country’s high levels of violence, inflation and chronic shortages of goods. International organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have accused the Venezuelan government of politically-motivated arrests, particularly against those who have voiced their opposition to President Maduro and his policies.
One of Venezuela’s most well-known personalities, the writer, journalist and television producer Leonardo Padrón (1959-), penned an article in 2014 titled, “Pozos de Agua Triste” (Wells of Sad Water), the last part of which questions Maduro’s fundamental humanity, who in Padrón’s eyes is evidently unmoved by the suffering of so many of his fellow citizens.
In a kind of self-exile, Venezuelan composer Miguel Santaella recently composed a powerful setting for female voice of Padrón’s text in which the composer not only uses onomatopoeia (to represent rifle shots and exploding ordnance) but also pulls words and even syllables apart to reveal the naked desolation that has consumed what was once the love of country and its hopes for a peaceful and prosperous future.
Sara Moreira Marques, Soprano.
