Set consists of a score and five parts.
One of Juan Bautista Plaza’s most productive periods as a composer was while he was a student in Rome, where he may have composed as many as forty works, including this 1923 composition, “Nocturno elegíaco” for English horn and string quartet. Although the extant manuscript (dated 1923) bears this title, the title under which he registered this same work in his 1963 catalog, “Elegía para corno inglés y orquesta de cuerdas,” suggests that he may have considered replacing the string quartet with a string orchestra.
