Solo for piano.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
The piano played a fundamental role in Venezuelan social life from about the middle of the 18th century until around the middle of the 20th, its repertory being increased by outstanding pianists and composers, such as Heráclio Fernández, Manual Guadalajara and Teresa Carreño. Venezuelan composers instituted the use of local melodies and rhythms into the sonatina, that without including the musical discourse of the Romantic sonata permitted the inclusion of these popular elements. The present work belongs to this tradition.
The first movement is in the style of the 19th century Venezuelan waltz; the second is a languishing and tenuous melody constructed out of the modal scales typically heard in Carora, a town in western Venezuelan; and the third evokes the rhythm of the “joropo,” a typical dance of Venezuela’s central region. The work possesses evident nationalistic elements but at the same time represents the composer’s syncretic usage of 20th century harmonic and melodic materials.
Kimberly Davis, piano.
