The Zulian dance is a typical musical expression of the western region of Venezuela. Characterized by its incessant rhythm in 6/8 time, in certain ways the rhythmic structure of this dance allows it to mix with elements of the joropo, which is a kind of music found in the country’s central area. In this work, “Ritual Mestizo” recreates and mixes these forms in a simple manner, thereby generating a work of incessant rhythmic movement and particularly rich harmonies. Pérez Valero’s work is constructed in a three-part form in such a way so as to contrast the rhythmic accent of the joropo in the flute with the zulian style of the piano. The work is dedicated to the Duo Alborada (Nicaulis Alliey, flute and Kimberly Davis, piano).
