Solo for unaccompanied bassoon.
Grade 5. Approx. duration: nine minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
Tonadas are simple improvised work songs from the central and western regions of Venezuela. For example, while milking cows farmhands sing these songs so as to pacify the cows to produce more milk. Pérez Valero’s cycle of five tonadas is intended as an homage to these songs that can be performed in any order or even repeated when necessary. They evoke a language somewhere between modality and pandiatonicism, and bring to mind stars, clouds and sunrises, that is, our direct contact with nature. These works can easily occupy a central position on a program of solo works for bassoon.
