José Angel Montero’s “Romanza” is not only the only extant work for clarinet and piano written by a 19th century Venezuelan composer, it may also be the only work of its type from the whole of 19th century Latin American repertoire. Montero was a very productive composer who was particularly adept at writing theatrical music and songs, which is a characteristic that we can appreciate in “Virginia,” his only opera, and in his fifteen extant zarzuelas. With this in mind, the “Romanza” could very well be defined as a song without words for its style and structure: a pompous introduction on the piano gives way to a straightforward melody, the first measures of which are reminiscent of a lullaby. The piece gradually moves into a section of controlled lyricism that leads, just before the end, to a cadenza that finally flows into a long coda, in which the clarinet slowly disappears to pianissimo. The publication of this short work, unique for its rarity and peculiar beauty, is a modest contribution to the knowledge and dissemination of 19th century Latin American concert repertoire, which, unfortunately, is little heard at this time.
Carlos Saldaña, clarinet
Ludwig Miranda, piano
