Solo for English horn with piano accompaniment.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: eleven and a half minutes.
Set includes a piano score and one part.
The English horn is well known for its melodic possibilities, its expressiveness and the deep, and slightly melancholic color of its low and middle registers, but this wonderful instrument can also achieve effects of rhythmic vitality and strength, thanks to its ability to make short and precise articulations. The high register also has its musical value, since it has a hard, penetrating and a little bit of a sharp quality when in forte. The foundation of this work is the contrast between these two worlds: in the first and third movements, lyricism and a cantabile quality are exploited, emphasizing the somber colors of the low register, while in the second and fourth movements, short articulations are used profusely to create vital rhythms of a dance-like nature, and the somewhat harsh sonority of the high register is highlighted. The fifth and final movement is a synthesis between the two qualities identified as Apollonian and Dionysian, as Nietzsche proposed in his famous works ”The Birth of Tragedy“ and ”The Tragic Thought of the Greeks.”
