String quartet
Grade 3+. Approx. duration: eleven and a half minutes.
Set includes a score and four parts.
Composed in 2008, the titles of the five dances that comprise this work are evocative; though not necessarily referring to any specific program. In the “Grotesque Waltz” and the “Street Gallarda” some formal and rhythmic aspects of Venezuelan folk music are exploited, although with no nationalist intent. Rock and salsa influence the “March of the Damned” and “Arrabalero Night,” respectively, while in the “Dance of the Warriors” one can appreciate the use of the famous rhythm, “alla Bartok.” Although never having been played in its entirety, the “March of the Damned” was used as a prelude to the work, “Three Songs” (2012), and the “Street Gallarda” was used in 2009 as part of the music for a documentary about the lives of the homeless in Caracas.
