Solo for unaccompanied contrabassoon.
Grade 4. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set consists of a performance score.
The Ballad of Bigfoot is a descriptive work for unaccompanied contrabassoon inspired by the popular myth of Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, as he is known in the native American languages, one of the most popular creatures in the mythology and folklore of the US.
It is structured in three movements: “Walking Through the Forest,” “Nocturne” and “Ritual Courtship Dance.” All three are connected by common leitmotifs, using the technique known as a cyclical form.
As a composer, I have thought that the contrabassoon is the most appropriate instrument to describe Bigfoot, especially because of the powerful and menacing character of its pedal register, the somewhat dark and sinister character of its middle register and the nasal quality of its highest notes.
