Poetic Melodies is the result of a commission by American oboist William Wilegus, to whom the work is dedicated. It is loosely inspired by four poems by José María Eguren, a Peruvian writer of the 20th century. The work is also a study in the use of octatonic scales, with only one particular scale employed in each of its four movements.
