Wind sextet (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, horn and bassoon).
Grade 4. Approx. duration: eight minutes.
Set includes a score and six parts.
Although this sextet for winds makes constant use of elements from Afro-Peruvian and Andean music, these elements almost never reach the level of a specific dance or melody. The first movement mainly relies on the Afro-Peruvian dance known as the “festejo,” which, after being heard for the first time is reshaped into ostinatos and canons. The second movement uses a melody introduced in the first movement, but this time in a slower tempo, and which also alludes to the Andean genre known as the “Hawawi.” A new Andean melody inserted into the middle of movement helps to articulate the latter. Similarly to the first movement, the last movement is a dance that uses the “festejo” rhythm, but by combining this with Lydian scales and atonal techniques it ends up having almost very little to do with Afro-Peruvian music.
