Alto saxophone with piano accompaniment.
Grade 3+. Approx. duration: ten minutes.
Set consists of a piano score and one part.
While beginning to compose this piece, it spontaneously occurred to Cuentas to borrow material from Tchaikovsky’s famous phantasy-overture, “Romeo and Juliet.” Furthermore, since the work makes constant use of Andean musical material, it seemed to him that it would be interesting to imagine how such a story would have played out within Andean society. This is not to say, however, that the work is programmatic; rather, it’s that there is just the suggestion of a program. In fact, it’s only in the third movement in which Tchaikovsky’s music is directly quoted; mostly, Cuentas uses the Russian’s music as way to play with a sort of musical intertextuality. Or, to put it another way, if Romeo and Juliet’s story had indeed been set in the Andes, Cuentas is sure that the Andean Romeo would have been easygoing, if not outright disrespectful.
The first movement is a “huayno” written as if it was a baroque dance. The second is a theme and variations, and the third is a “Santiago,” which is a festive Peruvian dance, though in this case written as a rondo.
