Single-movement work for symphony orchestra.
Grade 4+. Approx. duration: four and a half minutes.
Score only.
This work was written to commemorate the visit to the Dominican Republic of the YOA - Orchestra of the Americas and subdirector Carlos Miguel Prieto, as part of the celebration, “Santo Domingo American Capital of Culture 2010.” From this experience came the title, ”YOAminicana.“ ”YOAminicana,“ a symphonic work with national content, is dedicated to this important orchestra of which the composer, as a violinist, was a founding member.
The work is a brief folkloric overture that flows from the “to be continued” in that it pretends to complete ”Congofonía“ (2008), which at the same time is a continuation of ”Espacio Ritual“ (2007). It renews the musical expressions that belong to the songs of the Villa Mella Sacred Spirit joined more clearly and more obstinately with rhythms of sticks, sarandunga, congo and sonorities of the gaga.
The piece is structured in two sections of contrasting styles: “Tempo Bantú” and ”Rítmico,” separated by “tranquilo,” in which the trumpet reflects with sweetness and expressivity on the songs of the sacred spirit. The first assumes an active discourse about the development of folkloric materials, while the second represents a ritual trance in charge of an obstinate motive, while continuing the proposal over a Dominican minimalism.
